Sedation Dentistry

What is sedation dentistry?

Some people are extremely nervous about going to the dentist, making it difficult for them to get the dental care they need. Sedation dentistry uses medication that helps patients relax during their dental appointments. There are many different types of sedation dentistry, including:

  • Minimal sedation - relaxed, but awake
  • Moderate sedation - still awake, but may not remember much
  • Deep sedation - on the edge of consciousness
  • General anesthetic - you are completely unconscious

If you’re someone who feels uneasy going to the dentist, sedation dentistry may be the solution for you.

How do you receive the sedation?

Depending on your situation, there are different ways you can be sedated for your dental procedure. Your dentist may have you breathe in nitrous oxide — also known as laughing gas — along with oxygen. This type of sedation is minimal, and patients can sometimes drive themselves home after the procedure.

You may also take a tablet  Diazepam, which makes you drowsy throughout the procedure (you will still be awake). Sometimes, if further sedation is needed, the dentist administers a larger dose of Valium.

Some patients prefer to receive sedation through an IV, as the sedative goes to work more quickly. During this type of sedation, your dentist regularly adjusts the level of sedative to make sure you’re properly sedated.

For those who are especially anxious, medications that make you completely unconscious are available.

Who can get sedation dentistry?

For the most part, sedation dentistry is for people who have anxiety about getting dental work done. It may also work for those who have:

  • A low pain threshold
  • Problems sitting for extended periods
  • Sensitive teeth
  • A bad gag reflex

In many cases, children are given sedation if they are scared or unable to cooperate during treatment. In cases like this, the dentist will administer nitrous oxide, which is safe for children to use under the care of a dentist.

If you don’t feel comfortable going to the dentist, sedation dentistry can help you relax during treatment. If you’re interested in sedation dentistry, contact Cascadia Dental Specialists. They’re experts in providing a comfortable, luxurious experience to even the most nervous dental patients.
